Sue and her autistic son had fallen through the cracks. They had been homeless for months, ignored by Social Services, the local housing department and even the local housing advice charity. A friend of hers, whose church had a Grace Advocacy team, put her in touch with them. The team had Sue housed by the end of the week. When the emergency accommodation turned out to be inappropriate for her autistic son, the team worked with the council to move the family to more suitable accommodation. Six months later, Sue and her son moved into a permanent home that suited his needs.
Homelessness hits special needs families the hardest as their unique needs are often disregarded by those housing authorities who follow a cookie cutter approach to homelessness. Grace Advocacy will raise the family's unique needs with the authorities and ensure that they carry out their legal obligations to meet them.
Peter and Jane were looking for a property to rent when Peter's firm made him redundant. Jane's health was rapidly deteriorating, and Peter found himself her full-time carer. Without a job and on benefits they could not find a landlord who would rent them a property. On the Friday they were evicted, they had nowhere to go and planned to sleep in Peter's car. Then, a friend put them in touch with a local Grace Advocacy team. The team moved swiftly to obtain emergency accommodation for them over the weekend. When Monday came, they liaised with the council to move Peter and Jane to accessible temporary accommodation on the ground floor and large enough to accommodate Jane's disability aids.
Homelessness is not just about rough sleeping. Hidden homelessness is a problem, too. Many are forced to stay in temporary accommodations, shelters, and hostels, making it difficult to accurately assess the extent of the problem. Based on statutory figures, an estimated 288,470 households in England were owed council assistance.
Many in the UK are homeless or under threat of homelessness because they battle to navigate the complexity of the welfare system. Grace Advocacy helps by advocating for those facing impending evictions or those who are already homeless. We do this by contacting the relevant organizations on their behalf, obtaining specialist advice, gathering evidence, lodging complaints, filling in forms, phoning and following up relentlessly. We not only deal with homelessness, but we deal with many other related issues, such as debt relief, income and social care, to stabilize our client's lives in the future.
